Why it matters

Most smoke alarms rely on sound. If you cannot hear them, you may escape too late.

How a bed shaker works

A vibrating pad goes under the mattress or pillow. When the paired smoke alarm sounds, it shakes to wake you.

Flashing light alarms are also available. The shaker doubles as an alarm clock, so you can practice waking to vibration.

Free installation in the US

Through its Sound the Alarm campaign, the Red Cross installs alarms for free. After a request, a volunteer schedules the install.

In Korea

In Korea, registered deaf people on basic livelihood or near-poverty support can get a signaling device and vibrating clock through the government assistive device program. Apply at your community center. Questions: 129

Seniors living alone or disabled people without constant care can get fire sensors through the emergency safety service. Questions: 129
