For firefighters and rescuers

DeafBlind people communicate by touch or by writing on the palm. Write slowly, one letter at a time.

Please be patient. It takes time for them to understand what is happening.

Their emergency card lists contacts, medicines and how they communicate.

How to get out together

  1. Tap their shoulder lightly

First let them know you are there. Pulling their arm suddenly can startle them.

  2. In a hurry, draw a large X on their back

It means "I cannot explain now, come with me." It is widely used in the US.

  3. Let them hold the back of your arm or shoulder, and walk ahead

They follow half a step behind. Pushing them ahead makes them lose direction.

  4. Cover nose and mouth, stay low, take the stairs

Do not use the elevator. Metal stair rails can be hot.

If you cannot get out, text 119

Write your address, "I can't hear or see well," and what happened.
