What is it

Tatum1 is a robotic hand that turns text into tactile fingerspelling. DeafBlind users read messages by touching the hand.

Tatum Robotics in the US built it with a DeafBlind team.

Calling 911 alone

Each robot works as its own phone. The user signs to a camera and a relay interpreter voices it.

The robotic hand fingerspells the reply. The registered address is sent to 911 too.

I don't have to bother my wife. I can just independently make a phone call by myself. It's my favorite thing.President of a Boston DeafBlind community group and Tatum quality tester (Oct 2, 2026)

How it differs from braille

Even braille readers find phone calls too fast in braille. Signers can read familiar fingerspelling right away.

Can I use it in Korea

Not yet. Korean Sign Language fingerspelling is already built in, but the device needs Korean certification first.

For firefighters and rescuers

DeafBlind people communicate by touch or writing on the palm. Please be patient.
