Sudden vision loss needs care today

Sudden blindness, curtain-like vision loss, or many new floaters and flashes can be an emergency. Go to an eye clinic or ER today.

Five things to prepare now

  1. Learn your evacuation route by touch

Count steps from your door to the stairs and remember handrails and doors. Smoke makes visual wayfinding hard.

  2. Prepare to text 119 without reading the screen

Turn on magnification, screen reading, and voice assistant. Save a 119 text template in your phone.

  3. Plan for blackouts and night

Keep a flashlight in the same place and charge phones and assistive devices.

  4. Emergency contacts in large print

Put family and supporter numbers on a large-print card and phone shortcuts.

  5. Carry an emergency communication card

Keep a card that says how you communicate, for example asking someone to guide you by the arm.

If hearing and vision change together
